What to Expect at an FLL Challenge Qualifier
A qualifier event is a full, exciting day. FIRST LEGO League events run on a tight schedule—please be early for all judging and match sessions. Judging takes priority if there’s a conflict.
Below is some information to help your team prepare:
- What to Expect at a FIRST LEGO League Challenge Event
- Tournament Day Overview – AZ webinar from SUBMERGED Season
Your team will compete in three Robot Game rounds on the official field—your best score counts!
Here is what to expect during your 30-minute judging session:
Lunch
- Teams are welcome to bring their own food.
- Please keep pit areas tidy and free of food during matches and judging.
- Lunch area: outdoor, campus grass area; NOT PIT
Other Notes
- Pit Area is for team members/coaches. This event is open to the families of your participants. The main viewable portion of the event is being held in SC100 student pavilion so there should be enough space (but it is hard to say for certain depending on how many additional people show up per team).
- Team Members shall always stay together with Coach/Adult’s supervision, Gilbert Farmer Market Event will be in the morning in another parking lot.
- Teams are welcome to bring their own map for practice in the open area (as long as it does not block the pathways or would make a hazard in an emergency).
- Shared practice tables will be available on a First Come First Served basis.
- Please help us keep the venue clean—we’re grateful to our host for the use of their facility.
Notes for Smooth Event:
- FIRST® LEGO® League events follow a strict schedule. Judging sessions take priority over robot matches, which can be rescheduled if needed.
- We will have a livestream of the event for anyone who would like to watch from home. You can find the livestream at: (https://youtu.be/LerOqh9r1NE)
- Don’t forget to bring your robot charger, an extension cord, spare parts, and a copy of your robot programming to show to judges.
- NO Bluetooth is allowed during the competition. Please bring a USB download cable to update any code on your robot.
- No matter how ready you think your team is for competition – come anyway! Tournaments are a great place to meet other teams, get ideas for the future, and most of all, have fun!
Competition:
- Each team will have 1 practice round and 3 competition rounds in the official robot game. Only the highest score in the competition rounds will count towards team rankings.
- Each team will have one 30-minute judging session where they will present their project and robot design presentations. Teams may not have any help from coaches or adults during the judging session.
- The judges will ask the team questions about their core values. There is not a core values activity and there is no time to present a core values poster.
- Each team will have one table and 2 chairs for their homebase/pit during the event.
Awards:
- To be eligible to win awards / advance to state, your full team needs to participate in all 4 areas of the competition: robot game, robot design, core values, and innovation project.
- Winning an award does not automatically qualify you for State.
- Advancing teams will be determined by the top overall rankings in all 4 areas combined.
6 Teams will advance to the State. (out of the 22 teams competing)
Feel free to reach out with questions. See you soon for an amazing day of robotics and innovation! Best regards,
